COPING WITH BEREAVEMENT, GRIEF & LOSS WITH THE HELP OF COUNSELLING

I am an experienced Doncaster based Bereavement, Grief and Loss Counsellor. I specialise in Bereavement Counselling in Doncaster, but clients looking for a Bereavement and Grief Counsellor often contact me from Barnsley, Mexborough and Wakefield as all are within easy travelling distance to my office.

Death is after all, inevitable. When someone close to us dies we have to cope and adjust to living in a world which has changed significantly. The person or pet we love is no longer part of our life. We may have to let go of some dreams that we had shared with our loved one or we may feel that there are things we would like to say to a person, but are unable to do so.

The feelings that people experience in bereavement are unique and everyone will cope with a loss in their own way. Although bereavement is a very personal and often traumatic event, most people go through a range of recognisable reactions and emotions with someone they are close to dies.

A loss may not involve a bereavement at all. I have worked with people that have contacted me about various losses in their life that they have found traumatic or very difficult to deal with and adjust to. These losses have included:

Loss of a child/children living at home and moving to University or their first home
Loss of a partner when a relationship has broken down.
Loss of self worth after being made redundant
Loss of self worth and identity having worked in a professional all through life and then having retired
Loss of the relationship as it was due to illness or disability and having to potentially take on a carer role that has changed the dynamics of the relationship.

Some of the most common feelings experienced after suffering a bereavement or loss include:

Shock and disbelief
Guilt
Regret
Anger
Loneliness
Pain
Relief
Fear
Sadness
Denial
Resentment
Helplessness

As difficult as it is to manage, the grieving process enables people to come to terms with the loss. Many people find it hard to deal with grief and try to mange their feelings and emotions by keeping them bottled up or denying their sadness and trying to put a brave face often for the sake of other loved ones. The problem with this behaviour is that it can often prolong the pain and lead to long tern difficulties that will affect your relationships with family, friends and work colleagues and may lead to depression.

HOW CAN A COUNSELLOR HELP ME AFTER MY LOSS OR BEREAVEMENT:

A Counsellor can;

Help you to understand the stages of grieving
Discover strategies for coping with the symptoms of grief and loss
Help you to resolve areas of conflict that are still remaining as you deal with your grief or loss
Give you the support to enable you to accept the reality of the loss and understand its significance
Help you to work through any confusing pain, anger and management of guilt that you may be experiencing
Help you to re-adjust to your new life with all the changes that are occuring
Help you to let go and to move on whilst respecting the loss that you have experienced.

My practice is in Cusworth, Doncaster, but is within easy reach of Wakefield, Barnsley and Rotherham.
